Did a presentation on this in my Bio-mechanics class last semester.
Dealt with the minimalist shoe hype (Nike Frees, Vibrams, New Balance Minimums) vs “Actual Improvement in Running Performance” (i.e running efficiency & ground reaction forces) after they got their new shoes.
*Work on technique first, then find a shoe that caters to your anatomy & bio-mechanics
** Next time you’re at the gym, pay attention to the sound their feet make with the treadmill as they run. Great form should have minimal (sometimes absent) foot banging.

^ If you need shoes, any Lunar’s (preferably Eclipse/Glide) because they have dynamic support that counters overpronation (what happens due to flat feet) or even a Structure Triax if you want more durability, wider toebox, more stability.
Frees are for walking imo, unless you run like a cheetah.
